Ciplox Tablets (Generic Cipro) - Active Ingredient And Chemical structure

Ciplox (Generic Cipro) is a synthetic broad spectrum antimicrobial agents for oral administration. It is a faintly yellowish to light yellow crystalline substance with a molecular weight of 385.8. The active ingredient contained in Ciplox Tablets is Ciprofloxacin Hydrochloride. The structure is shown below

Ciplox manufactured by Cipla Ltd., India is an effective treatment of certain infections caused by susceptible bacteria. Cipro which has the active ingredient Ciprofloxacin Hydrochloride is also sold as Ciloxan, Proquin Baycip, Ciloxan, Ciflox, Cipro XL, Ciproxin, Prociflor, Proquin and under various other brand names.


Generic Cipro (Ciprofloxacin Hydrochloride) - Uses

Ciprofloxacin Hydrochloride in the form of Ciplox Tablets is used to treat the below mentioned indications in Adult Patients:
Urinary Tract Infections caused by Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterobacter cloacae, Serratia marcescens, Proteus mirabilis, Providencia rettgeri, Morganella morganii, Citrobacter diversus, Citrobacter freundii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus saprophyticus, or Enterococcus faecalis. Acute Uncomplicated Cystitis in females caused by Escherichia coli or Staphylococcus saprophyticus.
Chronic Bacterial Prostatitis caused by Escherichia coli or Proteus mirabilis.
Lower Respiratory Tract Infections caused by Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterobacter cloacae, Proteus mirabilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Haemophilus influenzae, Haemophilus parainfluenzae, or penicillin-susceptible Streptococcus pneumoniae. Also, Moraxella catarrhalis for the treatment of acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis.
Skin and Skin Structure Infections caused by Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterobacter cloacae, Proteus mirabilis, Proteus vulgaris, Providencia stuartii, Morganella morganii, Citrobacter freundii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus, methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus epidermidis, or Streptococcus pyogenes.
Bone and Joint Infections caused by Enterobacter cloacae, Serratia marcescens, or Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
Complicated Intra-Abdominal Infections (used in combination with metronidazole) caused by Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus mirabilis, Klebsiella pneumoniae, or Bacteroides fragilis.
Infectious Diarrhea caused by Escherichia coli (enterotoxigenic strains), Campylobacter jejuni, Shigella boydii, Shigella dysenteriae, Shigella flexneri or Shigella sonnei when antibacterial therapy is indicated.
Typhoid Fever (Enteric Fever) caused by Salmonella typhi.
Uncomplicated cervical and urethral gonorrhea due to Neisseria gonorrhoeae.


Ciplox Tablets (Generic Cipro) - Preparations

Ciplox is available as tablets of 100 mg, 250 mg, 500 mg and 750 mg .


Ciplox Tablets - Storage Requirements

Ciplox Tablets are to be stored at room temperature (15°C to 30°C). Store away from heat, moisture, and light.


Ciplox Tablets (Generic Cipro) - Dosage

Ciplox tablets should be swallowed whole with adequate amount of liquid.
Ciplox tablets can be taken with or without meals. Antacids should not be taken concomitantly or within two hours of dosing. Below are the recommended dosages for adults for the specific indications.
Respiratory tract, bone and joint infections
Mild/moderate 500 mg twice daily/or 1000 mg once daily
Severe/complicated 750 mg twice daily
Urinary tract infections
Acute uncomplicated 500 mg od for 3 days
Mild/moderate 250 mg twice daily / 500 mg once daily
Severe/complicated 500 mg twice daily/or 1000 mg once daily
Infectious diarrhoea
Mild/moderate/severe 500 mg twice daily/or 1000 mg once daily
Gonorrhoea 250 mg single dose
Non-gonococcal urethritis 750 mg twice daily
Chancroid 500 mg twice daily/1000 mg once daily
Other infections 500-750 mg twice daily
Chronic Bacterial prostatitis: 1000 mg o.d. for 28 days


Ciplox Tablets (Generic Cipro) - Contraindications

Ciplox is contraindicated in persons with a hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin, any member of the quinolone class of antimicrobial agents, or any of the product inactive components.


Side Effects Of Ciplox Tablets (Generic Cipro)

Ciplox (Ciprofloxacin)is generally well tolerated. The most common side effects of are Diarrhoea, vomiting, abdominal pain, headache, restlessness and rash, have been reported. Other side effects which have been reported very rarely include myalgia, tendonitis/rupture, exacerbation of myasthenia gravis and increases in serum transaminase levels.
